Their real reasons are pure conjecture, although their massive GSE contributions suggest it was not just concern for the poor.<BR/><BR/>Regardless, helping the poor was the way it was sold politically, and like many progressive ideas, who can argue against affordable housing for the poor? You can't. It's a political loser. The next election the inevitable TV ad appears with the foreboding voice - "and he voted against helping poor Americans buy their first home".<BR/><BR/>Affordable housing is one of those topics that it is suicide to oppose unless you are willing to go into a whole discussion of economics, and nobody wants to hear that shit.
